Shinto is a religion commonly practiced in Japan. Shinto is an action-based religion that focuses on ritual practices and connecting the present-day and the past. The main focus is devotion to kami (spirits/divine beings), various rituals and shrines.
According to Shinto, kami are not gods. They are spirits that are concerned with human beings. They appreciate human's interest in them and want us to be happy. When treated properly, they help humans with health, success and fortune.
Shinto is meant to connect people with Kami. Rather than a religion, most people who practice Shinto see it as an aspect of Japanese lifestyle. In that sense, Shinto and Buddhism have been able to coexist in Japan for centuries.
